My models are made from plaster and from these models I cast plaster moulds used for slip casting. The slip casting process is a technique used in mass-production of ceramics. It is particularly useful for complicated pieces that would be otherwise difficult to reproduce on the wheel or through hand-building.
I use this process to produce small-scale batches of functional ware. The accuracy of model making mirrors my interest in geometry. The repetition of slip-casting gives multiple casts of the one shape, when grouped together this in turn creates a larger image of interesting geometric patterns.
Through this repetitive production method I found myself looking at a mass of identical objects. On reflection I found my imagery and drawings from the drafting process to be aesthetically pleasing. I began to develop these into graphics and in turn used them as decals for surface design. The layering of the drafting process and design development lead me to designing with light complementary colours, with darker cross-sections.
Selecting only a few pieces to decal in a sea of white draws attention to their individuality. I hope this sequentially allows the viewer to question the possibilities for the rest of the pieces.
